Colorful rugs: They’re beautiful! But their bold, bright bravado can be intimidating and feel tricky to pull off. After all, you don’t want to end up with an overly busy space that tires out the eyes and doesn’t feel cohesive. But don’t worry! It’s easy to decorate with colorful rugs—and they’re not something that can only be pulled off by designers with years of experience and an expert eye for color. Here, we’re going to show you how to decorate with bold, bright rugs, and why they make such lovely additions to your home.
If you’re thinking about rolling out colorful rugs in your home, but are worried about how they’ll mesh with the existing colors in your space, we’ve got plenty of tips to guide you through the process.
Find your color “bridge.” Take stock of all the colors in your space currently. When picking out a rug, look for styles that have at least one color in common with the rest of your space. This color will be your connecting “bridge” color, and will help keep things cohesive and feeling in sync.
Connect color through accents. Bring in pops of color that coordinate in some capacity with the colors in your rug. Perhaps a couch pillow matches the blue in your rug, or a red from your rug is picked up in an art print. We love doing this through bigger pieces like accent chairs and sofas, too.
Don’t worry about being perfect. Don’t stress about finding the perfect shade match or making sure your rug aligns 100% with every color in your space. In fact, slight variations in color are a good thing and go a long way in adding depth and character to your space.
Balance out the boldness.
Mastering the art of color in interiors is all about balance. Even if you have a cohesive color palette you’re working with, the trick to pulling it all off is all in how you use these colors, and in what proportions. Here’s what we mean!
Spread out the bold, bright moments. A colorful rug with oversize artwork, wallpaper, and bright furniture might be a lot. (Although if that’s your look, go for it! We’ve seen it pulled off many times.) Help maintain a sense of balance in the room by spreading out these bold pieces so the eye doesn’t become overwhelmed.
Mix up scale. If you have a number of different patterns throughout your space, try using a mix of small- and large-scale motifs to add some variability. This is a tried-and-true designer trick and will give your space the layered look you crave.
Incorporate some neutrals. Whether it’s on the sofa, coffee table, curtains, or walls, we recommend infusing a few neutral pieces in your space to add a fresh pop to your colorful rug. This doesn’t mean doing only neutrals on top of your rug though, which will make the space feel off balance. But a few key pieces throughout the space will do the trick!
Coordinate with a painted wall. Pairing a rug to your wall color is a wonderful way to create a cohesive color story and help the rug feel more immersed and connected to your space. Think of it as a beautiful color sandwich—the base layer being the carpet, the inside all your furniture, and the top the walls.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Don’t be afraid to try new things and play around with what works best! If you’re starting with a bold rug, you can always add things and take them away and experiment with your look until you’ve found the right balance. That’s part of the fun of decorating, right?
Think about the rest of your home.
Is the space you’re wanting to roll out a colorful rug connected to other rooms in your home? If so, you’ll need to think about not only the room it’s in, but those surrounding it too. The last thing you want is a brightly hued room that sticks out like a sore thumb amongst a house full of neutrals.
Consider the lines of sight from the adjacent rooms, and if the hues of your rug will be disruptive when you’re hanging out in those other rooms. You don’t have to match up the colors perfectly—or at all—but it’s one of those things you often don’t think about until you’ve already got the rug rolled out.
Pro Tip: Start with small colorful rugs if you’re nervous.
Not ready to dive head first into the bold world of colorful rugs? We get it! Dip your toe in the waters by giving a smaller colorful rug a chance, say in a 4’ x 6’ or 5’ x 8’ size in petite spaces like the bathroom or an office. We also love the idea of layering a small bold rug on top of an existing neutral rug to test out the look, too.
