Welcome to the first edition of our new Floor Tour series, where we ask some of our design friends to tell us about their favorite rugs and the rooms they live in. First up is Suzannah Stanley, a blogger, mom of two, and pro DIY-er living in what she calls a “funky old house” just outside of Portland, Oregon.
Though it has solid, traditional bones, Suzannah’s 1937 Tudor is filled with all the little quirks that come with older homes. So she’s been slowly updating it over the past few years, taking on projects big (a kitchen reno!) and small (floating shelves!) to create the modern-meets-traditional home of her dreams.
When it comes to decor, she gravitates toward neutral hues, natural textiles, and materials with character. “I love something with a little texture and a light pattern—especially for a rug, which is the biggest element of the room other than the walls. It’s almost like another wall color,” Suzannah says. Needless to say, we love that sentiment!
Keep reading and tune into our Instagram Stories to see how she styles our rugs in her bedroom, nursery, and on the stairs as a runner. And don’t forget to follow her on Instagram here and check out her blog here!

Tonal Texture in the Bedroom
For the main bedroom, Suzannah wanted a neutral rug to compliment the rest of the soothing hues in the space—but one with depth and a hint of pattern to add some character. She landed on our Pinstriped Jute rug. “The texture is really nice,” she says of the style. “It feels good on your feet, and I love how it’s this natural soft color. We’ve got a lot of beige and green happening in here, and I didn’t want just a plain jute rug. I love the little stripe it has in there.”

Subtle Stripes in the Nursery
“We call it the pointy room,” Suzannah says of her daughter Lucy’s nursery, which is situated right off the main bedroom. After installing new floors, giving the walls a fresh coat of paint (see her DIY post about that here), and making a custom Roman shade for the window (another brilliant DIY—see here!), she didn’t have to look far for a rug. In fact, all she had to do was go downstairs—our wool Woven Cabana Stripes rug had previously been in another bedroom and then their dining room!
We love the subtle texture and pattern it brings to the nursery, and think it will pair beautifully with other pieces as Lucy grows into new furnishings (or, Suzannah can simply try it in another room!).

Soft (and Slip-Free!) on the Stairs
With a toddler and baby in the house, Suzannah wanted to make sure her stairs were as safe as possible (aside from blocking them off with a baby gate). So she ordered 3 of our 2’6” x 8’ wool Paddle rugs in black and installed them right down the stairs as a runner. “It’s safer, it’s so cozy, and a great neutral color,” she says. It might seem like a tricky project, but Suzannah insists that it’s easier than it sounds and goes pretty quickly once you get started. Check out her DIY instructions to pull it off on her blog here!
