If there’s one thing we know, it’s that almost any space can benefit from a rug—and that certainly includes niche outdoor areas like greenhouses! So, we were thrilled when we saw Alma of @almafied‘s gorgeous new greenhouse sporting one of our washable indoor/outdoor rugs. Crafted from a durable, versatile material that’s easy to throw in the wash, these styles are as practical as they are pretty—and work as well inside as they do out. We had to learn more about Alma’s rug choice and absolutely everything about her backyard greenhouse. Keep scrolling to hear more from Alma on this stunning project!
What made you want to get a greenhouse?
“I never thought I would get my hands on a greenhouse, although I have always thought they were cool and would be fun to own. But, actually, the real reason I got one is because my husband saw this one in a store, and thought I needed to have it. He literally rushed me to the store and gave me a list of reasons why I should have a greenhouse. I’d say he’s a keeper!”
Tell us about the process of finding the greenhouse and building it!
“I’d like to think I didn’t find the greenhouse, but rather, the greenhouse found me. I’m kidding. It really is all because my husband, Jason, stumbled on this one in a store and remembered me saying maybe a year prior that it would be so cool to have one. As far as building this one, Jason built it pretty fast. Maybe a total of 4 hours. I think a handful of times he needed my help in holding some pieces together as he screwed them into place. I would say it’s slightly more advanced from, say, building Ikea furniture.”
How did you choose the Kristen Geometric Washable Indoor/Outdoor rug for the space, and what made it the right pick?
“I wanted a rug that would be good for outdoors, washable, and had a pretty pattern on it. Bonus if I could find one with colors that are not too vibrant, but could still give a punch of color. To my surprise, I found one, and it covered all those bases!”
What are the key pieces you brought in to make it feel more homey?
“I knew I wanted the greenhouse to be a mix of the things I love: playful, neutral, boho, comfortable, and welcoming. I think the best description would be California-casual. I think some key pieces that give that California-casual vibe would be the pops of rattan, the “garden” sign, the macrame plant hanger, and the terracotta pots.”
Tell us about what you’re planting in the greenhouse, and anything else you’re planning on using it for!
“Funny you ask, because as of now, I have tried to grow herbs, ferns, succulents, etc., and I will tell you—I am a ways away from figuring out how to successfully do this. But it’s only been a couple months, so there’s time. The good news is this is all for fun, so no pressure, right?!”
Do you have any updates or DIYs you want to do to the space in the future?
“I plan on adding a sink which will make things a lot easier. Also, I would love to swap out the DIY curtain fabric, maybe to a ticking stripe pattern. And lastly, I recently realized I need to add a shade to the side of the greenhouse that gets harsh afternoon sunlight.”
What is your favorite moment in the space?
“My favorite moment in the greenhouse probably changes from week to week, but I think in general, it’s usually the setup of the back wall. Since it’s the first thing I see when I swing the door open, I like to keep it happy and styled in a way that puts a smile on my face!”
