Introducing: The Rugs USA 2022 Trend Report!

January 7, 2022 by Elizabeth Wieck

It’s a new year! And with it, so many beautiful, fresh home decor trends to incorporate into your space. While we know home trends are not the same as those in fashion—and that it’s not realistic to switch your home up every time a new trend comes around—there are small ways to incorporate these 2022 home decor trends in your space. And our avenue of choice is through rolling out a new rug!

There’s a trend for every taste in this roundup, whether you’re wanting to incorporate some color, interesting shapes, or a luxurious new texture. Keep reading to learn how to rock the latest rug trends in 2022!

Shades of Brown

It’s no secret that we love neutrals around here! So we’re so excited to see brown shades rise to the top to become the next “it” neutral. Consider these shades an earthier alternative to creams, taupes, and grays (which, by the way, we still think are top-notch color picks!). Browns will add richness and a beautiful natural quality to any space they inhabit, pairing perfectly with all washes of wood and nature-inspired colors like green and blue.

Our Top Picks: Banded Shag rug in brown, Victorian Ombre rug, and Zella Washable Vintage rug.

Graphic Checks

From fabrics to decor, checkerboard and and punchy plaid patterns have been all over the place in the last year, and we expect to see even more of them in the future. We love how this trend translates to rugs, and the fact that you can go bold with an oversized check pattern or try something more subtle with a micro take on the trend.

Our Top Picks: Alondra Wool Modern Striped rug, Jute Checkered Basketweave rug, and Jute Checkerboard rug.

Mixed Materials

When most people think of rugs, they usually think of a piled or flatwoven style made from one or a blend of conventional materials like jute, wool, or polypropylene. But lately, we’ve been seeing rugs crafted from a more eclectic mix of materials—think cowhides being cut and sewn into striking patterns, or leather strands woven together with wool or cotton. The result? Luxurious styles that offer a wonderfully unique texture that are guaranteed to make a memorable addition to your space.

Our Top Picks: Leather And Jute Flatweave rug, Palmer Leather Chevron rug, and Diamond Panel Leather rug.

Unexpected Washables

Washable rugs have certainly had their moment over the last year, and we predict they’ll become even bigger as we head into 2022. Specifically, washable wool rugs, shag rugs, and faux cowhides—styles that may not seem conventionally washable, but actually come in an array of easily washable styles. So, get ready to sit back, relax, sink your feet into these perfectly plush rugs, and never have to worry about stains or messes again!

Our Top Picks: Naomi Wool Chevron Washable rug, Luna Washable Shag rug, and Zahara Faux Cowhide Washable rug.

Bring the Indoors Out

We’re spending more time in our homes than ever, so it’s important to make sure every area is as comfortable, beautiful, and homey as possible. And that extends to the outdoors! First, roll out a stylish, indoors-worthy outdoor rug (we have a ton of options here!), then add indoor-esque finishing pieces like lighting, poufs, blankets, and pillows. And voilà! You have an outdoor space that’s just as lovely as those inside your home.

Our Top Picks: Iris Totem Indoor/Outdoor Flatweave rug, Solid Braided Indoor/Outdoor rug, and Native Indoor/Outdoor with Tassels rug.

Sustainability Chic

Sustainability: It’s good for the earth, and, it turns out, pretty stylish inside the home too! For rugs, that means rolling out styles made with recycled materials or planet-friendly natural fibers like jute and sisal.

Our Top Picks: Our Striped Jute Basketweave rug, Textured Moroccan Jute rug, and Jute Wavy Chevron with Tassel rug.

Go for Green

Just as browns are having a moment, another earth tone is too—in the form of gorgeous green. Whether it’s muted olives or bright pops of emerald, this trend is all about incorporating the fresh hue and adding a hint (or a lot!) of nature’s beauty to the home.

Our Top Picks: Hand Braided Denim And Jute Interwoven Solid rug in green,  Printed Persian Overdyed Vintage rug in green, and Diamond Medallion rug in olive.

Round it Out

From round sofas to rounded out archways, curvy shapes and finishes are having a major moment in interiors right now. Want to get in on it in an easy, affordable way? Try out a round rug! Roll out a rounded style in an unconventional space, like under the bed (as seen above!) to really show off those stylish curves. We love the contrast of a round rug paired with more classic, angled elements.

Our Top Picks: Reverse Herringbone rug, Ring Around the Rosette rug, and Flourishing Medallion rug.

Nature’s Beauty

This trend is all about bringing nature’s bounty into your home, and incorporating all manner of natural designs—be it a punchy palm leaf print or a traditional rug with subtle floral flourishes. Turn up the look even more by adding in plants and earthy tones of green, blue, and brown.

Our Top Picks: Floral Tiles rug, Floral Fringed rug, and Jungle Washable rug.

Sleek Black Accents

There’s no denying the sleek and chic look that black accents add to a space. Whether in a rug, lighting, fixtures, or small decor pieces, little flashes of black are perfect for making your space pop and for creating a modern vibe with depth and interest.

Our Top Picks: Faded Stripes Fringed rug, Jute and Cotton Token rug, and Banded Shag rug.
