Welcome to the next installment of our Floor Tours series, where we step inside the spaces of some of our favorite design-world friends to chat all things rugs and decor and learn how they’ve turned their house into a home.
This week, we’re touring the Nashville-area home of Shelley Bates (who you should absolutely give a follow on Instagram here!). She and husband Greg and children Bo and Gracie moved into the house a year and a half ago, and have slowly and thoughtfully been renovating and DIY-ing every inch of the space to create a comfy family home. We’ll hand it over to Shelley to give the grand tour and spill all the details!
Tell us about your style! How would you describe your home and aesthetic?
This is always a tough question for me because I feel like my style is ever-changing! I love bright, white rooms and kitchens, but I’m also in love with dark, moody spaces. You’ll see a mix of both throughout my home. I love plants, so some spaces have a bit of a boho vibe, while others are more transitional and modern.
What made you choose to move into this home?
Before we bought this house, we owned a two-bedroom condo in downtown Nashville. We absolutely loved living small and the low-maintenance life the condo provided. We had a very pleasant, but very unexpected surprise when we found out we were pregnant with our second baby, so we quickly started searching for a house outside of the city with a bit more space! We love this area and we have such a wonderful community here. We actually live next door to our best friends!
What has the process been like designing your space, and making your house feel like a home?
The process of designing and transforming spaces has always been one of my favorite things. My mom has a great eye for design and my dad builds houses, so that’s where I get my love for building and home design. Designing spaces has always been a passion of mine and it is such a fun challenge for me to look at a blank space and figure out how to make it my own. It’s honestly something I’m always thinking about. Greg and I will be watching tv at night and he’ll see me stare off into another room. He’ll just laugh and say, “Now what?!”
What is your most treasured item in your home?
When we moved into this house in December of 2019, I was anxious to fill up every room with furniture (especially because we more than doubled our square footage coming from the condo). Our dining room is the first space you see when you open the front door so that was the room I was hoping to tackle first. Greg asked if I could wait to design that space because he was planning a surprise for our 5th wedding anniversary in May. For 6 months I patiently waited and tried to remain calm each time I walked through that empty room! When May rolled around, he surprised me with the most gorgeous dining room table that he built with a friend of ours. It is by far my most treasured item in our home!
We have to ask about your rugs! What rugs do you have from Rugs USA, and what made them the perfect fit for your space?
Oh gosh… I have several rugs and I love them all! My favorite rug I own is the Moroccan Tasseled rug in off-white. I have it in our dining room and I always receive compliments on the style and feel.
I also have the Floral Ornament rug in ivory in our living room and I love how durable it is. It’s in a high-traffic area with lots of sippy cups and toys, and the rug still looks as good as it did the day I bought it!
When I was designing my daughter’s nursery, I wanted something really soft and feminine. The Soft Solid Faux Sheepskin rug in ivory instantly caught my eye and I think it’s the perfect addition to her little space!
Let’s talk projects! What DIYs or renovations have done in your home? What’s next?
This house was built in the early 2000s and needed quite a bit of work when we moved in. We hired a contractor to bust out a wall in the kitchen to remove a pass-through window and open the space up a bit.
Other than that, we have done all of the work ourselves. We’ve installed accent walls, built-ins, transformed the fireplace, built cabinets in the breakfast nook… the list goes on! As far as my next project, my son is asking for bunk beds so I’m really excited to start planning out his new bedroom.
Do you have any design tips you’ve discovered while decorating that you’re willing to spill?
Never underestimate the power of paint! You really don’t need power tools or fancy gadgets to transform a space. A little bit of paint goes a long way, and don’t be afraid to choose a bold color!
When it comes to decorating, I love to shop my home. I feel like everyone says that, but it’s so true! It’s fun to find new combinations of pieces that work well together in different spaces.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I have found the most amazing little community through Instagram and it’s where I find the majority of my inspiration! Even if we aren’t friends in real life, I still call my fellow home-design lovers my friends, and they are all so inspiring! I also love looking on Zillow at houses for sale in the Nashville/Franklin area.
What do you love most about your home?
This is an easy one… the people in it. I am so blessed with the most precious little family and without them, this place would be pretty sad and lonely. I have to clean the floors multiple times a day, the laundry is never done, and I can’t ever keep the house straight… but I wouldn’t trade it for the entire world. I welcome the messes and usually spend nap time quickly cleaning one area to snap a quick pic for Instagram!
