Porch Rugs: Welcoming Mats and Carpets for Porches Large and Small

June 10, 2022 by Corinne Weaver

Your front or back porch is a window into your style and personality. Picture pots of plants sitting out front with a porch swing and some children’s toys, while shoe racks and maybe even a milk box are found on the back porch. What’s on both is a welcome mat. More and more these days, porch rugs are an additional, beautiful way to welcome guests to your home, offering a landing pad for family members, and sometimes hold packages or deliveries until you get to the door. Your outdoor porch rug should match your personality.

Outdoor porch rugs offer many fresh new looks and can change the style and appeal of your front porch with the seasons. These days, you can keep them looking clean and new with the hundreds of washable variations available, as well as the hardy outdoor porch carpet that lasts forever and take a beating from the elements. You can have multiple rugs on a bigger porch as well, whether it’s runner rugs on a narrow long wrap-around porch or an area rug on a broader porch. When it comes to outdoor porch rugs, the opportunities are endless.

Invite Your Guests in with Outdoor Porch Rugs with Personality

Encapsulate your personality with a front porch rug. It can be stylish and sophisticated, whimsical and cute, or personalized in some other way to your taste. Welcome mats and porch rugs can help keep mud out of your front hallway, but they can also bring a cheery banner to your front porch and usher new visitors and returning family members in. Outdoor porch rugs can also completely replace welcome mats altogether, spreading outwards to create a transition from indoor space to outdoor space. If you want to distinguish the doorway, lay a welcome mat on top of your outdoor porch rug. We think the following kinds of outdoor rugs are excellent choices for making your porch pop with your own distinctive personality:

Braided outdoor rugs: A rustic, organic braided outdoor rug can create a durable background for a farmhouse-styled porch. Whether you want a large rug that covers rail to rail, or a small welcome mat, braided rugs offer class and sophistication and clean muddy shoes at the same time.  This Handmade Braided Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug in salt and pepper offers both the versatility and the durability you need.

Persian outdoor rugs: Persian rugs might seem like they only belong indoors, but a Persian-styled outdoor rug can elevate your outdoor space into a room that stepped out of a style magazine. These outdoor rugs can handle the sun, rain, and wind, and keep giving you that elegant appearance your space deserves.  This Blossom Emblem Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug in orange adds a pop of color to your porch.

Floral outdoor rugs: Bring your desire for a beautiful outdoor garden to your porch or patio. Blossoms and colors can intertwine with your furniture effortlessly, without a need for water or fertilizer.  Rugs like this Multi Tropical Hounds Area Rug offer a hilarious and adorable image to make your guests crack a smile as they come over to visit. It can also leave a cute image behind as you leave the house.

Other front porch rugs can still welcome guests but can direct them towards the front porch seating area, the potted plants area, or whatever else you’re using your porch for. Use a runner rug like this Braided Gradience Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug in charcoal to guide guests to your seating area or to the back door. A runner rug can also hold all of the shoes that you want to stay outside, as well as an umbrella stand, or a place to put packages. When a welcome mat is just too small, consider a runner rug.

Washable Front Porch Rugs: Today’s Messes Meet Their Modern Match

Gone are the days of beaten down and worn-out front porch rugs that look like they’ve seen better days. With washable front porch rugs, you can keep your front porch looking as neat and clean as your interior decor. Nature doesn’t stand a chance against these easy-to-clean, stylish rugs. If your big dog loves to sit out on the front porch but tends to be a little muddy, you can wash the rug he sits on while you wash your dog.

Two washable rugs can give you the versatility and reliability you need. While one is running in the washing machine, the other can bring a fresh new look to your outdoor space. Never let your porch go bare while a washable rug sits in the machine. After all, these rugs are affordable and available in a lovely variety of designs, so why not keep some spares in the wings?

Don’t hesitate to line up pots of plants and decorative porch water fountains around these washable rugs. This Shay Garden Washable Indoor/Outdoor Rug brings vibrant colors to a plain front porch, but the washing machine can help keep the colors bright and the white splashes clean and fresh. Consider putting an outdoor rocking chair on this rug with a sturdy throw pillow that matches or has a complementary floral pattern.

Many Styles for Many Seasons: Replace Your Front Porch Rug Often

A fresh coat of paint can be time-consuming. It also requires you to settle on one color or style for a long time. With rugs, gone are the days of old outdoor turf serving as an outdoor porch carpet. With a front porch rug, you can change the style or the vibe as many times as you want to with many different front porch rugs. For the summer, match the bright rays of the sun and the intense heat with a blossoming vibrant green rug. For the winter, match the environment outside with a warm, chunky braided rug. If you wish to preserve some of the elements of seasons past, pick a rug that has a pattern that reminds you of the outdoor environment you love, like a spring rug that will keep lively blossoms on it even in the dead of winter.

Rugs like this Aztec Prism Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug in charcoal from Rugs USA offer a unique look that can pair well with a summer outdoor style, or a fall outdoor style.

Meanwhile, rugs like this Multi Lush Hibiscus Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug can blend in well with your blooming spring garden or offer an oasis of warmth and color during dreary winter months.

Fill a Large Porch with Many Outdoor Porch Carpets

If you have a large porch, whether in length, width, or both, don’t feel limited to just one rug. Many rugs can complement each other or create different spaces within one outdoor frame to offer a versatile space that can take on any activity. Consider putting a small outdoor porch rug underneath a little table with two chairs to create a small snack or game area, while rolling out a large outdoor porch carpet on the other side to give children a space to play on the porch.

You can use multiple runner rugs as well to bring in different styles while still covering the floor of your porch. Three runner rugs – one striped, one dotted, and one in a floral pattern – can offer a unique design approach to an outdoor space. If you can’t make up your mind on which pattern to choose, choose all of them instead.

Rugs USA offers welcome mats to keep muddy shoes and dirty paws off your pristine porch as well. Consider layering a welcome mat outside your door on a porch area rug. For even more options, look at some of the 2×3 rugs or the 3×5 rugs to use as welcome mats, either on your porch, patio, or front door. Use your outdoor porch carpet in many different ways.
