June 16, 2022 by Elizabeth Wieck

Q: Should a rug go under the couch? Or in front?

A: It can go either way! It all depends on the size of your rug and the layout of your furniture. If you have a small rug, say one that is 4’ x 6’ or 5’ x 8’, your best bet is to place it in front of the couch and centered under a coffee table if you have one.

If you have a medium-sized rug, or a style that’s 6’ x 9’ or 8’ x 10’, we recommend placing it underneath the couch with at least the front set of legs resting on the rug. And for rugs that are 9’ x 12’ and up, you’ll likely have enough room to place all the legs of your couch on the rug.

We recommend getting as big of a rug as your budget allows. After all, more rug coverage means a cozier, comfier space! But no matter the size you get, you can’t go wrong with either of these three arrangements in spaces that have sofas.

Q: How do you get bumps out after buying?

A: Because our rugs arrive at your doorstep rolled up in protective packaging, they will likely have a few bumps and creases when you roll them out. This is totally normal! Your rug will naturally flatten over a few days. But if you need to speed up the process, place a couple heavy books on the particularly pesky spots to help them flatten out more quickly.

Q: I have a dark brown velvet couch, what color rug should I get?

A: Brown velvet is so lovely! And luckily, you have a ton of options when it comes to picking a rug that will go with your couch.

If you’re into a neutral look, cream and beige rugs are a beautiful complement, creating a contrast in color without actually adding color. We love the idea of bringing in texture to play against the smooth sheen of the velvet, like with rugs with a high-low pile, tassels, or natural woven elements. If something colorful is more what you’re after, look to the warm tones found in brown to help you decide on a rug. Rugs with red, orange, or yellow accents make an amazing pair to brown, pulling out the warmth of the hue while adding tons of color to your space. Q: If I have a large outdoor space, should I get multiple rugs? How do I make sure they go together?

A: How amazing to have such a large outdoor area! We love the idea of rolling out multiple outdoor rugs in your space. It’s the perfect way to create separate “rooms” and really delineate each area of your outdoor space—like a dining area and sitting area, for example.

In terms of making sure the rugs go together, the main thing to keep in mind is that your rugs should have something in common. That could be color palette, pattern, style, or another detail you feel like ties them together.

Q: What shape rug would go well in a corner of a square room?

A: If you’re looking to spruce up a spare corner, look no further than a small round rug! Styles like our Braided Concentric Circles rug, Braided Floral Blossom rug, and Braided Jute rug add visual interest to an otherwise empty space, and feel like an unexpected moment that adds tons of character.
