Just because you have a small outdoor space doesn’t mean you can’t get major enjoyment out of it! We’re firm believers that even the most petite of spots can be turned into outdoor oases with smart planning and the right furniture and accents (plus an outdoor rug!). Whether you have room for just a few or can accommodate a mini crowd, here are a few favorite small patio ideas to get your space prepped for the upcoming sunny season.
Roll out a rug!
Maybe we’re biased (ok, we’re definitely biased), but we think one of the best (and easiest!) ways to pretty up your patio space is to roll out a rug underneath your furniture. Not only will it create a soft feel under bare feet, but it will also be key in making your outdoor spaces feel as cozy and put-together as the ones inside your home.
You’ll definitely want to use indoor/outdoor styles, which are made to hold up against, mildew, fading, and the other elements that come with being outside. Shop our collection of outdoor rugs—which, if we’re being honest, look and feel just like indoor styles—right here! And if you have any questions about outdoor rugs, read our guide on everything you need to know here.
Create a corner setup.
This adorable corner setup is proof you don’t need much space to create a backyard lounge you’ll love. Place a couple chairs—even styles that fold up will do—around a low-slung drinks table, throw in a couple pillows and plants, and string up outdoor lighting to create a spot that feels just as homey as your indoor spaces. And don’t forget to roll out an outdoor rug underneath it all to pull it together!
Beautify the balcony.
Balconies, as tiny as they can be, are a godsend for city-dwellers—and it’s 100% possible to make them as well-decorated as the apartment inside. A slim loveseat or a pair of chairs will make the space comfortable for a couple, and potted plants plus a few patterned accents will add the perfect stylish touch.
Elevate with an umbrella.
This might be one of our favorite small patio ideas! We love the chic, clean look of the white and tan furnishings, and the hint of pattern and texture our Striped Border Indoor/Outdoor Flatweave rug in light brown adds to the space. But the main event is that fabulous tasseled umbrella, aka the most stylish way to block out the sun we’ve ever seen!
Go vertical with a garden.
Don’t have enough room to create your dream of having a garden full of potted plants and herbs? No problem! Look to the walls of your patio and build up. You’ll get all the benefits of having fresh herbs on hand at all times (jealous!) plus the added bonus of gorgeous greenery to elevate all your backyard hangs. And how amazing do all the plants look with the graphic black and white rug and pillows?
Have fun with accessories.
Here’s a little trick we’ve learned over the years about creating outdoor spaces that feel comfy and livable: Treat them exactly as you would if you were decorating an indoor room. Seriously! Just because it needs to weather the elements doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish. These days, there are so many options when it comes to tracking down pieces that can live outdoors, from rugs (we can help with that one!) and pillows to wall accents and planters. Have some fun and do a little digging—we think you’ll be surprised at how chic of a space you can create.
Pull up some poufs.
In a small space, moveable furniture is your best friend. And in this particular instance, we mean poufs! They’re an easy piece that can do just about anything at a moment’s notice. Pull up one (or two!) for an extra spot to sit, set a tray on top for an impromptu drinks table, or use them to sit back, relax, and put up your feet. We’re creating your outdoor oasis, after all!
