Area rugs are a common staple of home décor. People love them for the added softness, comfort, and the extra touch of beauty that turns a room from drab to fab. A little-known fact, however, is that area rugs can bring more than an aesthetic revamp to your living space. In actuality, one of the great advantages to having a rug in your home is its ability to defend against allergens!

You may be asking yourself, how can an area rug help me fight off sneezes? Here are just a few of the benefits:

Pollen Filtration. Placing a small rug near your door and window helps catch pollen particles as they float in through your window. In wool especially, particles that would normally float around freely are trapped by the rug fibers. All that's left for you is to vacuum up those pesky allergens. To maximize the benefits of your new area rug, choose a vacuum that utilizes a HEPA filter.

Allergen repellant. Rather than trap them, natural fibers such as Jute, Sisal, and Seagrass neutralize floating allergens. These fibers are also mold and mildew resistant. Polypropylene, the most popular synthetic rug choice, is another great option for mold resistance.

Movability. While it might seem like a great idea to cover your floors from end to end with wall to wall carpeting, there is one very important difference that makes area rugs the better choice for your protective needs: area rugs can be removed regularly for cleaning. Of course, you can still steam clean your carpets, but the slight dampness left over after cleaning is more than enough to jumpstart mold growth.

We can go on and on about all the wonderful benefits to owning area rugs, but we think you've got the point. So, if allergies are getting you and your family down, why not invest in form and function with a few new area rugs?
